When all else fails, there is but one option left - surgery. However, such extreme measures are not for everybody and even then, it is to be used as a last resort, i.e. when all previous attempts at losing weight using conventional methods have not been successful. Most medical professionals will only perform weight-loss surgery on a patient that has been classified as morbidly obese, i.e. BMI of 35 or more. Such surgery is intended to alleviate and/or prevent the health dangers commonly associated with extreme obesity, such as heart failure, diabetes, liver disease etc. It is certainly NOT a procedure carried out for cosmetic reasons, or even psychological reasons (eg. low self-esteem). However, there are always ways and means around this stringency. For the right price, there are a few doctors around who are willing to set medical ethics aside, and perform the said surgery on someone who does not meet the obesity requirements.
Weight loss surgery can be divided into three categories -
(a) Restrictive Procedures
(b) Malabsorptive Procedures
(c) combination of both (a) & (b)
Restrictive Procedures basically decrease the size of the functioning stomach so that patients are unable to eat as fast or as much as they usually can. As such, patients end up eating much less as the body is fooled into thinking that there is more food inside the stomach than there really is. Although restrictive operations lead to weight loss in almost all patients, they are less successful than malabsorptive operations in achieving substantial, long-term weight loss. Successful results depend on the patient’s willingness to adopt a long-term plan of healthy eating and regular physical activity.
Malabsorptive Procedures basically limit the amount of food being absorbed in the intestines. The absorption of nutrients, vitamins, fatty foods and carbohydrates occurs predominantly in the small intestine. And if some of that is bypassed, or not part of the normal food stream, then the amount that can be absorbed is significantly decreased. Because of this, Malabsorptive procedures are not really popular as they might result in severe nutritional deficiencies for the patient.
The following are the most prevalent forms of weight loss surgery practised today.
NOTE: All methods listed in this section have been verified to be LEGITIMATE fat loss methods, i.e. they do work, in varying degrees. I wouldn’t even bother to include them here if they were rubbish.
